Let’s talk about strobe lights! 

I’ve started sharing more work lately where I use my strobe lights on my instagram and blog & I get questions about it all the time! 

I know studio lighting can be daunting so I wanna share more about what equipment I use and a few techniques so you can get started.

So a strobe light is one that is not consistently on during the whole shoot, but it’s like a flash that will fire with the camera. It means a lot more checking the back of the camera than I’m used to with natural light, but it gives me a lot more control.

And the change of pace is nice because it helps me sink into my artistic process as well. Slowing down is so good for all creatives.

Also, positioning the lights also has a drastic effect on the photos. If I light more directly on their face it creates shadows under their chin. So I make sure to light from the side which is more flattering for boudoir.

Another thing I get asked about a lot is the “window” effect you can see on my photos here. To get the “window” shadow effect, I use an attachment called an optical snoot attachment. (See the link above!) 

My biggest piece of advice is to learn your settings when it comes to using a light. And know it will take a lot more patience, and trial and error. (YouTube will be your friend!) But the main key is to learn your camera settings as well as the light settings because they both have their own.

You will learn little tricks…like you can’t have your camera speed usually over 100 or the photos will not come out!
